How Does Physical Therapy Work?
Evaluation: During your first visit I will take a thorough history of what brings you in for your visit (how long you’ve had your injury, what aggravates it, pain patterns, etc). I will then take you through a series of tests and measures to determine what the cause of your pain is and how we are going to fix it. Think about what goals you would like to meet through physical therapy (I’m going to ask!). Your goals are going to determine how we outline your individual plan of care moving forward.
Home Exercise Programming: At the end of your first visit you will be sent home with a few exercises you are to perform outside of the clinic to jumpstart your rehab. I will provide you with a thorough explanation/ demos of all exercises included in your unique program and check your form on each before you leave the clinic. You will also receive access to an online portal so you can see videos, pictures, and written instructions of each exercise. Your home program will be updated regularly as you continue to progress!
Treatment: Your follow up treatment visits will be made up of a combination of treatment strategies dictated by your impairments/ presentation (i.e. manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuro re-education, etc). We will game plan at the beginning of each visit to make sure you are progressing as expected and getting the most out of your treatment session. I typically see patients 1-2x/ week depending on your goals, progress, and the extent of your injury. The total duration of care varies from patient to patient and will be discussed at evaluation.
The end goal of treatment is to get you back to all your activities and/ or sports without limitation, all while preventing future injuries! Throughout your rehab process, my goal is to educate you about your injury so that you walk away with the tools to stay pain-free.
